Andrew Msungu

The Department of Information and Records Studies (DIRS) is among the three departments at the Sokoine National Agricultural Library (SNAL). DIRS was established in 2016 as a result of the restructuring process at Sokoine University of Agriculture.  DIRS offers non-degree programmes (Diploma in Information and Library Science, Diploma in Records, Archives and Information Management), undergraduate bachelor degree (Bachelor of Information and Records Management) and doctoral studies in librarianship, information studies/science and records management.
Graduates are mainly employed as information managers, archivists, records managers, librarians in both public and private sectors. Our graduates are prepared to work in the present era of technology advancement  which calls for public and private organizations and institutions at all levels to generate, organize, access and maintain volumes of information in supporting their activities and decision-making as well as in keeping evidence, corporate memory, and intellectual assets.
Currently, there are 17 academic members of staff (majority of whom are PhD holders) entitled to teach the programmes at DIRS. The Department is reputed for providing high quality education and skills to students besides undertaking innovative, creative and problem-solving research in information, archives and records management to ensure sustainable proper management of information. It is dedicated to bring about scientific advancements and technological uptake in the areas of information and records management.
Apart from the long term academic programmes, DIRS conducts short courses in the areas of information literacy and user education, library management, information systems, archives and records management, reference management, academic writing and publishing, grant proposal writing and many more.
